Jersey City, New Jersey
is ranked the least patriotic city of the 100 cities surveyed, in
the July 2010 issue of Men's Health magazine. You make what
you will of that.
Men's Health
determined patriotism by calculating the following in some bizarre
algorithm that they did not divulge the precise formula for:
-
Percentage of
registered voters who turned out for state and federal elections
from 2004 to 2008l,
-
Percentage of
residents who volunteer, participate in civic activities, and/or
work with neighbors, and finally,
-
Sales of fireworks and
US flags.
Note that it is illegal
to buy or use fireworks in New York City or New Jersey. See the
coverage at
nj.com -- great video! |

Gimberts,
a century-plus-old bar in a tough corner of Tufftown Jersey City
shut its doors for good on March 17, St. Patrick's Day, 2007. I
was lucky enough to make a simultaneous first (and sadly) final
- visit on the "final Friday," March 16, to soak up
some warm nostalgia and more than some ice cold Miller Genuine
Drafts. A trip backwards in time, and further evidence of the
changes affecting Jersey City. [more] |
