VMWare is one of the great inventions of the past 30 years in the computer software industry. It is and has been used by countless computer software professionals to create virtual computers within your computer.
This is a hard concept to explain to someone without a software background — but it is an invaluable tool used by Tech Sellers, Developers, and Technical Support people to create variant environments within which they can have different versions of software running. It also provides for tremendous backup capability.
VMWare has been challenged by Docker Containers in the last 8 years — but VMWare has not gone away; in fact it holds quite steady in usage.
VMWare comes in several flavors:
- VMWare in the Cloud
- VMWare Workstation
- VMWare Player
The VMWare Player has always been a free application if you are utilizing it for non-commercial use. Despite it’s name — “Player” — you can actually create VMWare “images”, and edit VMWare “images” that you have created with VMWare Workstation to increase the RAM and hard drive memory of the VMWare “image” that the Player runs.
Here is a video we created to show you how to do this:
Note that in May, 2024, Broadband — VMWare’s new owner — made VMWare Workstation free for personal use, and discontinued VMWare Player.
